president’s message

Greetings, Happy Quilters!!  I know you are Happy Quilters…because, generally we quilters are a happy bunch!  Even in these wild and crazy times…we are a happy bunch!  Our fabric stashes make us happy!  Our stacks of UFO boxes make us happy!  The piles of quilt tops make us happy!  The overloaded Quilt Racks make us happy!  Aaaahhh…  Life is good!  Isn’t it great to have our quilting passion to drown in when the rest of the world is stressing about life and times in pandemic mode?!  Yes, there are lots of things to fret about, but with our love of quilting, it doesn’t have to be 24/7!

The next TBQ gathering will be Monday, August 10, again at the Residence Inn by Marriott (3599 Lee Circle in Prescott).  It worked out great for our July meeting. The room was set up with chairs socially distanced, and everyone was comfortable.  The meeting begins at 9:30 a.m. Face masks are required.  Carpooling is encouraged.  Refreshments will not be provided.  Don’t forget your quilts for Show & Tell!!

During these trying times of pandemonia, we are forced to entertain ourselves.  Let’s consider it another chance to get to know each other better!  To quilting BEE friends!  We’re encouraging all attendees on August 10 to bring their “First Quilt” and their “Favorite Quilt”.  There can’t be too many quilts, can there?!  And, of course, ALL quilts come with a ‘story’.  Be prepared to tell us your quilt’s story!  Please enter with ‘quilt in hand’!  🙂

We also need a few more folks on our Team!  Please consider these positions, and let me know how you can help:

Newcomers ~ An entertainment committee for the new members to TBQ.  We probably need two to four working on this Committee.  And is it work if you’re gathering around the new members in a celebratory mode?

Mentor’s Table ~ Demo-ing…or arranging for demonstrations of quiltie techniques that we all want to know!

Opportunity Quilt

The new opportunity quilt was revealed at the July meeting. The quilt is named “Prescott Majestic Beauty”.  It was cut, sewn, and designed by Shirlee Smith, Carolyn Edwards, Sherri Hubbs, Cheryl Giovenco and Karen Adams. Quilting was done by Sheila Osbrink. Tickets will be available for purchase at the Guild meetings. Prices are $1.00 per ticket or 6 for $5.00.

We want to wish all of you a very Happy Birthday!

Are we still here?  Yes, we are…and hopefully ‘the world’ will be with us soon!  The Yellow and Blue quilts are still hanging out at the Adult Center…but nobody has been there to see them—except the skeleton staff.  So sad!  🙁  We’re not sure when the Adult Center will be open to the public again…perhaps September…  OMG!  #$%&!  What a waste!  But I know they are happy there!  It’s a happy place to be!  🙂  Our man Steve will let us know when the Adult Center is open again.

I have a volunteer who can help us hang the quilts!  Woohoo!  Thank you, Kathy Spry!

And we will get back to a normal ‘routine’ of displaying quilts…I truly believe that.  We NEED to…in order to stay sane!  If you have a theme that you’d like to see on display…just let me know!

incoming president’s message

Welcome to My Crazy Life!
Here we go again!  When I told my husband I had accepted the Nomination for TBQ President for the 2020-2021 year, he said…”you did that already”.  Well…Yes!  I did, but here we go again!  Please come along for the ride!  He plans to!  I hope you will, too!  There is not too much that is “normal” these days, but it is my hope that “this” will NOT go on forever! “Normally”, the July TBQ meeting is TBQ’s annual Birthday party.  Thanks to Dawnell…all that party-planning will roll over to the December party!

Our July 13th meeting will take place at the Residence Inn by Marriott (3599 Lee Circle in Prescott).  Meet at 9:30 a.m. Face masks are recommended. Carpooling is encouraged. Refreshments will not be provided. The Agenda will include the Election of Treasurer, Installation of Officers, officiated by past-president Kay Wentworth, Budget Approval, lead by Carol Wright and introduction of the Opportunity Quilt by Karen Adams.

out-going President’s message

Dear TBQ Friends,
Quilting is a sport, It involves batting, pumping iron, running, stitches, rowing, hooping, hunting for fabric. Yay! I’m an athlete!!! I hope all of you are getting your exercise in!

This is the end of an unforgettable year! I am so thankful for all of you. If it were not for my sewing sisters, I do not know what I would have done. The loss of my mom really took a toll on me. Thank you for giving me my space to help grieve and take care of all kinds of odds and ends for my dad- which I am still doing.

Carolyn Edwards, our incoming President, is such a fantastic person, quilter, and leader. I know it will turn out great!

Always believe that something wonderful is going to happen. Even with all the ups and downs, never take a day for granted. Smile, cherish the little things and remember to hug the ones you really love.

Thank you all for making this a nice year for me and the guild. I will cherish the friendships I have made forever. Please take a look the the Presidents Challenge Quilts under Show and Tell.

Membership

Thanks to everyone who sent in their electronic ballots for the slate of officers for the upcoming year.  The slate was unanimously approved by 74 ballots that were submitted by the deadline.   We now have a candidate for Treasurer which will require a vote at our July meeting. 

I have been diligently working on personal contact with each member to try and get the timely process of collecting dues for the 2020-2021 fiscal year. 

A big thank you to everyone who mailed me your dues check, and a big reminder to any member who has not paid their dues to please mail your dues($30) direct to me as soon as possible. If you have spoken to or received a message from me in the past couple of weeks, please follow through and send your dues to me at the address from the current directory.

July is rapidly approaching and the directory will be going to print soon, and you must have paid your dues in order to be included in the directory. 

If you have extenuating circumstances and are unable to get out to mail me your dues check, please contact me as soon as possible and I will do my best to make whatever arrangements I can to have your dues picked up by myself or another Guild Member.

Adult Center Display

Hey there quilter pals!  Here’s hoping everyone is surviving this unprecedented “quarantine”!!  Who would ever have thought we would be where we are in this mess as it stands today.   #$%&…Ack!  Oh well…onward and upward!  Did you get a quarantine quilt made?  That could very well be a future “theme” for quilts we hang at the Adult Center!  Let me know if you have a quilt in that category! 

We hung the blue and yellow quilts at the Adult Center on June 2nd.  It wasn’t even open!  But the on-site staff were thrilled to have our quilts blanketing their lovely new gray walls and soaking up some of the echoes in that big empty atrium!  Quilts were loaned by Carol Brownlow, Jane Holland, Barbara Merkel, Kathleen Semerau, and Candace Tomlinson…plus there are a couple of mine in there, too.  Hopefully, the Adult Center will open soon so you can stop by.  The quilts will make you happy…and we need all the “happy” we can get these days! 

These quilts will be up for a couple of months, and then we’ll be looking for red, white, and blue quilts to hang over the Labor Day holiday.  And sometime in the not too distant future, we’d like to feature the quilts of one of TBQ’s mini-groups.  How about yours?

TBQ member Jane Holland has helped with the Adult Center Quilt Displays since Day One–that was January 16, 2007!!  Yup!  We’ve been hanging quilts at the Adult Center for that long!  But now she’s wanting to step back from that responsibility.  Thank you, Jane! Is there someone out there who can take her place?  It’s a fairly easy job–about 5 or 6 times a year, the Hanging Team meets at the Adult Center to change out the quilts–exchange the hanging quilts for a new set!  What about you?  It would fulfill your High-Five Membership Commitment (see page 2 of the TBQ Directory)!  Talk to me if you would consider doing this for your Guild.

 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Dear TBQ Friends,

God grant the serenity to accept the things I cannot change. The fabric stash- to make a quilt to help me cope. A quilt to give – to comfort those I love in times of hurt, fear, and uncertainty. And the courage – to keep on sewing when life itself seems held together by a single thread of hope.

There will not be a meeting in June.  When the church is comfortable with large outside groups we will meet again.  

I hope this note finds you healthy, happy, and sewing a lot. I can’t wait to get back together again to catch up on everyone’s activities during this wonderful time. I hope your stash of fabric is holding up and you have all of your UFOs finished, to-do lists done, spring cleaning done, and everything you have put off completed. I know this has been a tough time for all of us but it will get  better.

I am so very happy with all of the work  Dawnell and the quilting community  did making and distributing the masks.   This has been a great show of support  for the people of Yavapai County.  

I’m not self-medicating with fabric. The lady at the fabric store wrote me a prescription. Well, she called it a receipt. Whatever.

Please keep safe, happy, and healthy. Keep sewing until we meet again soon.

Handmade Hugs

The Community Service co-chairs, Dawnell and myself, would like to thank all of our Thumb Butte Quilters who have contributed to our Handmade Hugs projects this year.  So far, we have donated over 55 quilts to Hospice of the Pines, and over 300 burp cloths and over 65 receiving blankets to Yavapai Regional Medical Center.   Since TBQ is not meeting in June, we are not planning on another Handmade Hugs meeting during this guild year.

Thanks to you, this year we have had a successful year and made hospice patients more comfortable and many new babies snuggled in soft flannel.

president’s message

Dear TBQ Friends,
Life is like a quilt… Years bound together, Established with family and friends, Backed with tradition, Stitched with love, With cornerstones placed carefully, to create a one of-a-kind journey through time.
Your TBQ Board is working through this stressful time to get things figured out.  Carolyn Edwards (President-Elect) and I are working closely together.  We have found out from the Church Pastor that we cannot meet in May.  He said if the Governor opened up some of the restrictions that he does not want outside groups coming into their church for a month, which is very understandable.  So, I cannot really give you a time as to when we will be together again.  We have some things we are supposed to get done before we move into a new guild year but due to our current quarantine, they may not get done on time. 
We are very thankful for all of the masks that you (and many other quilters in our area) have made and the efforts of Dawnell Muecke in getting this done for the community.  It has really been a huge undertaking and it is wonderful she stepped up to the plate to accomplish this.
I have stitched, formed friendships, laughed, shared secrets, eased burdens, and learned lessons.  For this I can be grateful.  This is the journey of a quilter.

We hope and pray this message finds you all safe, happy, and healthy.  Keep sewing until we meet again.

We took down all of Jane’s eleven quilts that have been hanging out at the Adult Center since January 8th…because they are taking advantage of the quarantine to p.a.i.n.t.!  Woohooo!  And we’re not getting back in until the quarantine is lifted.  🙁

President’s message

Dear TBQ Friends,
I can’t clean my craft room, because I get distracted by all the good stuff I found AGAIN!
I hope you all had a very special and wonderful Valentine’s Day!
I want to thank Karen Adams for having brought to our guild such a fantastic artist/quilter!  Andrea Brokenshire had a warm and funny presentation along with her VERY inspiring quilts!  It was really awesome!
It was fun seeing people who I have not seen in a while. I am glad you came to the meeting. Hopefully you will come more often.
The nominating committee met at my house and I know a lot of you received phone calls.  Thank you for answering the phone (LOL) as well as letting us know what kind of jobs you would like to do or not do.  Everyone was absolutely great!  We will know more by our next meeting.
I have received several phone calls letting me know how some of our members are doing and most of them have greatly improved.  My thoughts and prayers are with you all.
I hope you are all sewing like crazy! As you can tell by my quilting quotes, I have been very inspired and pulled out several of my 30-year-old PhD’s (projects half done) and have been actually completing them! It’s amazing how nice it made me feel! LOL!!!
I feel like I should clean the house so I’m going to my craft room to play until the feeling passes.

The Quilts they are a’ changin!  As soon as we round up TEN blue and yellow quilts, the delightful Jane Holland One-Woman-Quilt-Show will come down.  You still have a little time to swing by the Adult Center (1280 Rosser Street) to see Jane’s unique and one-of-a-kind creations!  Woohoo!  You know…you can go to the Adult Center to look at TBQ’s fabulous mini-Quilt Show (on display year-round), and then you can have a very delicious, reasonably priced lunch without even leaving the facility!  What an outing!  

If you have a blue and yellow quilt to include in our next exhibit, please, please, please let me know!
If you are in a mini-group, we encourage you and your mini-group to display your quilts together!  Wouldn’t that be F.U.N.!  🙂  Let me know and we’ll get you on the schedule!

Handmade Hugs

Hi Everyone!  Last month we met and assembled over 20 quilt tops with backing, batting and binding.  These quilts are now ready to be quilted by our members on a longarm or a domestic machine.  Kathleen Bond gave a wonderful demonstration of how to prepare a quilt and ideas on how to quilt on your regular sewing machine.  A big shout out to Kathleen!
These quilt kits are always at our meeting along with flannel kits for our burp rags and receiving blankets which we donate to the Yavapai Hospital for the Healthy Families program and other moms in need.  We donated 8 quilts to hospice, 68 burp rags and 24 receiving blankets to hospice in February.
Everyone is encouraged to take a kit or two home to complete so we can get the quilts to the hospice centers and baby stuff to the hospital.  Everything we donate is always appreciated by those who receive them.

President’s Message

Dear TBQ Friends,
Oh, the weather outside is frightful, but the fire is so delightful, and since we’ve no place to go… let us sew, let us sew, let us sew!
What a great meeting we had in January! Kay Wentworth’s quilts were amazing and the entertainment she provided was so great!  Looking forward to another great meeting in February.
We have a lot of members and their families that are seriously ill.  Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.  Thank you for your kind thoughts and messages when I was ill and in the hospital.  I really appreciate you all. 

Just to let you know we will be having our Company Store back this month.  We are still looking for more people to help out.  Also, when it is your turn to bring treats please help out by setting up and cleaning up.  I forgot all about this until I saw David and Trish helping this last month in the kitchen.  If you have any questions please look at page 11 in the directory.  I thank all of you for doing so much for this guild! (To me this sums up our guild.)

Handmade Hugs

Hi Everyone – Wow!  What a generous group of quilters you all are.  Since July 2019 we have donated 168 burp rags, 33 receiving blankets and 33 quilts for hospice.  We also have about 15 quilts ready to be quilted. Amazing work everyone!!  We will be having a Handmade Hugs day on Feb 24^th at St. Lukes  Church from 10 – 2 pm.  We hope to see you there to help out.  Remember, you can come for an hour or the whole time.  Everyone is welcome for as much time as you are able to donate.  We will be sewing, cutting and getting kits ready for the guild.

Reminder of what we are working on for 2019/2020 year

• Hospice quilts about 40 x 50 for adult hospice patients. These tops can be made from your own stash and patterns or one of the kits that we will provide at the meeting.
• Infant burp cloths –TB! Burb rag pattern-1
• Infant receiving blankets –TBQ -directions for receiving blanket and burb rag-1
• Reminder of where/when Handmade Hugs will be
  Hugs is a group that is open to anyone who wants to attend.
  4^th Friday at St. Lukes from 10 am – 2pm
• Look for the Hugs email that is sent out to the general membership that will verify the time, place and projects we are working on. No sewing machine or supplies are needed to attend.

president’s message

Dear TBQ Friends,

Friends are like quilts; they never lose their warmth.
It is hard to believe the year is over. I hope you have gotten all of your sewing projects done. The Christmas party team did a great job with the food and gifts, and the table decorations by Kristine White were outstanding! I hope you all had a safe and happy holiday.

We are in need of a WEB photographer, as well as a Company Store team. Please let Carol Wright,  Yvonne Blitch or Jude Bentley know if you are interested in the WEB photographer,  and let me know if you are interested in the Company Store.

Dear TBQ Friends,

A good day is a day spent quilting, laughing and sharing with friends. It was great to see so many wonderful friends at our November meeting! The 5×5 quilt show was really awesome and inspirational! I think everything went pretty well. I promise to get there early to turn the heater on. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. My door is always open.

I am looking forward to the Christmas party! I understand the committee is doing a fantastic job, so it should be a fun time for all!  See you all in December!

On November 19, 2019 we had a TBQ Newcomers Meeting at the home of Sharon Harris.  Fifteen members were in attendance.  We discussed the development of new Friendship Groups to meet the needs of this year’s Newcomers. The information gathered will be forwarded to our Friendship Group Chairwoman.  We also enjoyed sharing some show and tell quilts and chatting about various quilting techniques.  After snacks Sharon gave a tour of her amazing quilt studio, as well as a few of her quilts. In addition, Sharon let several present try her long arm. We all had such a nice afternoon.  Thank you Sharon.  Please see the following photographs.

Merry Christmas and Happy Happy Holidays!!!  The Christmas Quilts will be up before you know it!!  And guess what?!  They’ll probably be down before you know it!  Soooo, don’t delay in getting on over to 1280 Rosser Street to see all things Christmas!  Woohoo!  You’ll be glad you did, and it will get you into the Christmas spirit!!  And be sure to take your holiday visitors to see THE QUILTS at the Adult Center!  No matter what time of year it is, there is always a Quilt Show of TEN gorgeous quilts at the Adult Center–rain or shine!  It’s divine!  Don’t miss it!

 

We’re making plans for the 2020 Quilt exhibits.  If you have some suggestions, LET US KNOW!  Your Hanging Team consists of Jane Holland, Carol Sweeden, Cheryl Giovenco, Erin Sullivan, and Carolyn Edwards.  Let us know what ideas you have!

Dear TBQ Friends,
Gather the threads of your life and stitch them into joy.
Thank you all for coming to the Rodeo grounds for our meeting!  We had a great turnout!  It is a very awesome place to be in. The speaker Gail Shannon, was hilarious! We all enjoyed her.  I know several of you are either traveling or about to travel, so please have fun and be safe.  I hope to see more of you next month.
It’s really exciting to tell you at our October meeting we had 14 people sign up for Quilt Camp and have since filled it.  Kathy and Mary are taking names for cancellations, so if you want to be on that list please let them know. I am looking forward to Quilt Camp!

ADULT CENTER QUILT DISPLAY

These quilts will only be up for about a month, then it’s time to celebrate the holidays with all things  ‘Merry Christmas’.  If you have a Christmas quilt to loan to this exhibit, holler out!  We’ll hang them around the end of November until about mid-January.  If it turns out that the crowd really loves, and didn’t get enough of, Blue and White, possibly we can re-run that exhibit!

HANDMADE HUGS

This month at our workshop we had a jelly roll race and completed 12 quilts in 4 hours.  All of the fabric was from our community stash and what a fun bunch of quilts we finished.  In fact, we had so much fun that we have decided that each month we will do the same concept.  We will have a pattern picked out, all the kits cut and ready to sew and you can just come and enjoy the day.  Stay tuned for more info!

A good friend, like an old quilt, is both a treasure and a comfort.
I hope this note finds you all healthy, happy and quilting like crazy. I am excited to tell you all we found a new home!  We will be meeting at the Rodeo Grounds in the Danny Freeman building.  I sent out a map of the area and places to park.
Show and Tell was so exciting!  It just keeps getting better and better!  Congratulations to everyone!  Also, the program was fantastic too!  I can’t wait to see your finished projects!
I bet you were all shocked with the fabrics for the president’s challenge.

It’s a good thing everyone l.o.v.e.s. the Red and White Quilt Display as much as they do, because those quilts are going to be up a while longer.  And I’m sure that everyone who has had any kind of a joint replacement understands that it doesn’t always go like clockwork!  We recently rallied to hang the Blue & White Quilts but our man Steve at the Adult Center is having some issues with his knee replacement, so our Hanging Team had a good visit, admired the Red and White quilts, and took a “rain check” to meet again later when Steve is able.  The good news is that the lift (electric ladder) has been repaired!  We’ll get it all together eventually!  So until then…if you haven’t seen the Red & White Quilt display, you still have time to sneak on over to 1280 Rosser Street.  It will make you very, very happy!

The way it’s going, the Blue & White quilts will be up until it’s time to hang Christmas quilts.  (This year, it looks like we’ll be skipping Fall altogether…as far as hanging quilts goes.)  I can’t believe I’m talking Christmas!  So if you have Christmas quilts to loan to this exhibit, let me know.  We’ll hang them around the end of November until about mid-January.

Handmade Hugs

Hi Everyone – Did you know that Sept 21^st was National Jelly Roll Day?  Yes it was and  Handmade hugs thought it would be fun to participate.  At our September workshop we cut  LOTS of 2 ½ inch strips to make our own jelly rolls to get ready for a Jelly Roll Race for charity.

The Jelly Roll Race will be a day of just sewing for fun!   Here’s how it will work:  The cost to sign up is a promise to complete 1 quilt (quilted and bound) by May 2020.  This can be something you already have complete, your jelly roll quilt or even a quilt kit that is ready to go from the Charity supply.  If you take a jelly roll that Handmade Hugs charity supplies then we would like that to be the quilt you donate.  If you have a special jelly roll of your own and just want to sew that day you are MORE than welcome to participate if you promise a completed quilt by May of your choice.   At future workshops we will have batting, backing and binding for you to use as well.    Sound like fun?  Let the signups begin!  Remember…ANYONE in the guild is welcome and it’s a great way to get involved and meet people.  You do not need to know how to make a jelly roll race to join…but beware…they are addicting!!  It’s a quick, fun way to finish a quilt top.  Would you rather do burp rags and receiving blankets instead of a quilt??  Just let me know and we can work out a deal!

4^th Monday at St. Lukes from 10 am – 2pm.
Look for the Hugs email that is sent out to the general membership that will verify the time, place and projects we are working on. No sewing machine or supplies are needed to attend.

On September 30th the 2019 TBQ Newcomers gathered at the home of Barbara Merkel.  We had a fun afternoon getting to know one another.  However, the highlight was seeing all the wonderful quilts Barbara has hanging on the walls of her home as well as on quilt racks in the corners of her living room.  We send a THANK YOU to Barbara Merkel!
